One Century Of Buller Gorge Work Shattered.

Caption

Only about five of the 63 miles of highway stretching from Murchison to Westport had yet to be reconstructed.  Now nearly half is damaged, some is gone altogether, and man wonders whether to rebuild.  The Buller Gorge heaved mightily in 1929.  Thomas BRUNNER found it inhospitable country in 1847.  Ministry of Works spokesman suggested the route might be abandoned.  Northern outlet from Karamea assumes significance.
