Caption

James PARSON, the landlord of the Welcome Inn, at Little Beach, Charleston, was originally the owner-operator of a for hire surf boat at Constant Bay, Charleston, he actually walked along the coast from Charleston to Greymouth to take delivery of his boat where it was built, then he sailed and rowed it single-handed from the Grey River back home to Constant Bay where he engaged it unloading passengers and freight from the early ships brave enough to enter this dangerous anchorage.  Later on his hotel, the Welcome Inn at Little Beach, pictured here, was a more agreeable type of bar than the port, although less water passed over it.  To the left of the print and behind the hotel were situated PARSONs paddocks where sports meetings and horse racing were held.
