Caption

the first Sunday (June 23rd) after the big earthquake June 17th 1929.  This large rock rolled down the hill behind the two storey MANGOS Hotel behind the men, it crossed the road and shattered the dray on which it came to rest, had the dray not halted it's progress the rock would have gone right through the top storey of WELCH's Hotel (The Welcome Inn) at the Lyell, this happened about midnight and at that time there were twenty men in the bar drinking, one of whom was bushman Dave PEARSON, who owned the original print of this event and who supplied the data.  (this copy print by courtesy of Dave PEARSON)
