artillery or naval cannon, Westport.

Caption

this print photocopy of an artillery or naval cannon is the gun which was based at the drill-hall in Henley St, Westport, as can be seen it was mounted on a railway flat-deck type waggon, the rail lines at that time came out of the drill hall onto Henley St, they then crossed over Palmerston St and joined the main railway yard sets of lines, the purpose of this set-up allowed this artillery or naval weapon to be shunted by rail right out along to the extremity of the harbour tip-head, in this way it could be used to protect the harbour entrace from possible enemy shipping.  NZ was at war with South Africa about this period
