second Orowaiti Bridge, taken at night by the light of the moon only.

Caption

The second Orowaiti Bridge which was built upriver from the first bridge, the unusual feature of this print was that it was taken at night by the light of the moon only.  On the 26th April 1871 the District Engineer's report to the Provincial Secretary, Nelson - this entry refers to Buller, the road to the northern terraces goldfield at that time - quote - the expenditure has been £949-8-3 on this vote, the principal item was the purchase of the original Orowaiti Bridge from T J JONES for the sum of £600.  The remainder of the expenditure was entirely devoted to repairs of roads, from Orowaiti to the Caledonian, Giles, and Hatters Terraces, these roads are in a fair state of repair at present and will cost but little to keep them in repair during the ensuing year without the traffic increases very much.
