Hartley Palmer, Brightwater, Nelson served in the Territorials prior to World War 1. When war was declared Territorials were ordered to their respective headquarters, his being Spring Grove Drill Hall. Hartley and his friend Ted Baigent volunteered that night. After serving in Egypt, Hartley served at Gallipoli.

After having been diagnosed with enteric fever Hartley was sent back to England for treatment  and from there was sent home to New Zealand. Attached links show the cover of a comprehensive book Hartley wrote about his life, The Trail I followed, and his input into the film Gallipoli; The New Zealand Story, available online.  


Hartley Valentine Palmer spent the best part of his life in Westport and he and his family made a significant contribution to the town and community of the Buller.
