35120 Corporal Arthur Mairs


Born in New Zealand on 18 May 1885 and enlisted into the New Zealand Army on 24 August 1916. He was posted to G Company 20th Reinforcements on 30 August 1916. Embarked at Wellington for the United Kingdom. Disembarked at Devonport on 03 March 1917 and into Sling Camp.


Promoted to Acting Lance Corporal on 13 May 1917 and left for France on 28 May 1917. Appointment to Lance Corporal 10 August 1917 and to Corporal on 04 October 1917. Was wounded by a gas shell on 08 March 1918 and was admitted to hospital.


Returned to New Zealand aboard SS Tainui leaving Plymouth on 08 August 1919. Disembarked at Wellington on 21 September 1919.


On 28 January 1921 Arthur Mairs married Alice Blanche Edwards a trained nurse.


Arthur reenlisted on 06 August 1940 at nelson and was appointed Corporal on 01 July 1941.


Mr Mairs died at Westport on 05 October 1963.


Brother of Stephen Darlington Oxnam Mairs who also served in WW1.
