2011 is the year for the next School Reunion for South Westland Area School - it will be the 125th! 3-6 June 2011 [Queen's Birthday weekend]. Planning is well under way and details are listed below including ways to register [Join the discussion below or on facebook to add your thoughts/ideas and requests here for the celebrations]
South Westland Area School; located on Wanganui Flat Road in Harihari, is going to celebrate 125 years on Queens Birthday weekend [3-6 June] in 2011 - the planning committee has been formed and work is well underway to make this the type of event to be talked about for the next 125 years!
Outline of the Weekend
Friday: - 1pm School open for viewing
- 5pm till 10pm Registration at Harihari Motor Inn, combined with informal get-together at same venue.
Saturday:
Morning:
9am – Registration continues School Library
10am – Official opening (in school hall), includes:
Welcome ceremony
· Maori welcome including the Haka Kotuku rereka tahi - written by one of the students.
· Official welcome and thanking contributors (J. Derks, Reunion Committee Chairperson).
· School use/facilities introduction (A. Sloane, Principal).
· Introduction of Her Worship, Westland District Mayor, Maureen Pugh (by J. Derks, Reunion Committee Chairperson), with mayoral official address/opening and cake-cutting ceremony.
· Tea and coffee available following the welcome ceremony.
11am Formal photographs, Stuart Nimmo Photography – decades of attendance (cost not included in registration fee – details for individuals to order copies provided on the day).
12.30pm - Lunch
Afternoon
1- 2:30pm - School open, displays, conversation free time.
2:30 – 4pm. - Rugby game – Golden Oldies game at school field.
4 - 4.30pm - Afternoon tea.
4:30 – 4:45 p.m. - Presentation re Saltwater Hut facility (by N. Glancy, Deputy Principal, in school library).
6:00 p.m. Gather for evening food/function (school hall).
Evening:
6:15 p.m. Seated for buffet meal: Grace – J. Costello.
7:00 - 7:45 p.m. Compered time (Master of Ceremonies and speaker, A. (Tony) Ford), with keynote speakers:
Charles Lucas [Local Historian]
Angela Sloane [Current Principal]
Colin Smith [Past Student]
Michelle Adamson [Past Student]
8:00 p.m. onwards Music (DJ) at Harihari Motor Inn (cover charge cost – if any – not included in registration fee).

Hall remains available as venue for attendees to mingle/converse. (S. Nimmo, photographer, available to take individual, family etc. photographs as people might wish. Individuals to arrange, cost not included in registration fee).
Note: Cash bar will operate at school hall from 5pm till late, run by Harihari Lions Club.
Sunday:
10:00 a.m. Interdenominational church service at Combined Church Of St. James & St. John, Wanganui Flat Road, with Rev. V. Harber and Father M. Mahoney delivering service.
12:00 p.m. Closing ceremony, with open-floor as opportunity for attendees to speak (school hall). Tree planting and plaque placement to close event.
12:30 p.m. Free time to explore school, district and environs.
Weather permitting – Anderson Helicopters Ltd. (pilot Kevin Anderson) will offer a scenic flight service available from school grounds – opportunities include Saltwater Lagoon and hut, Wanganui Valley – Garden of Eden etc. - groups can elect where they wish to go. Trip location, duration etc. to be arranged by participants (groups of either 4 or 6 are optimal) in consultation with heliservices provider, with cost to be paid direct to helicopter operator. Pre-bookings possible by telephoning Anderson Helicopters Ltd. (03) 755 6606.

Up until June 1st registration - $75 per person [payment details included on the registration form]
