Diary of Agnes Eleanor Dean 1919

In 1919 my grandmother Nellie Dean continued her correspondence with husband to be, Reg Hird. The war had ended, but the army did not return Reg to New Zealand until June, when finally the 'Waimana' landed at Auckland. Reg had served two years overseas as a Sergeant with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade.

Nellie continued in her working life as a school teacher at Ferntown School, Collingwood.  1919 was to be her final year there however, as Reg arrived back from the battlefields of Europe in June and they immediately became engaged.  Nellie resigned from her teaching position and soon after returned to Karamea. Nellie and Reg were married on 20th January 1920 at her parent's home in Kongahu.  They moved into the farmhouse on Reg's farm in Umere and by the end of October 1920 my father, William (Billy) was born.  Reg and Nellie lived in Umere until the 1970s.
