amuel Carlyon Service No 4/911A, was born in Woodville, New Zealand on 15 February 1888. He was the son of Percy Frederick and Margaret Carlyon who lived at Henley Street, Westport. Samuel served with the Otago Infantry Battalion, New Zealand Engineers. At the time of enlistment he was living in Otira, West Coast. He embarked from Port Chalmers. Samuel died of wounds at Gallipoli, aged 26, on 01 June 1915. He is buried at - Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, ANZAC, Turkey- Grave Reference: II. E. 6. Samuel was mentioned in Despatchers: London Gazette, 5 August 1915, p7668: Mentioned in General Ian Hamilton's despatch of 20th May 1915. (Commander Mediteranean Expeditionary Force)
