John Henry Evans,Service No. 32945, World War 1, 1914-1918 of Granity, New Zealand was born at Stockton, New South Wales, Australia on 12 July 1895. John was approximately seven years of age when his family moved to New Zealand. At the time of enlistment in 1916 he was employed as a Railway Porter for New Zealand Railways at Granity, Westport, New Zealand. His Attestment form is dated 30 July 1916. His next of kin was listed as his mother Mrs Louisa Evans of Granity. He embarked on 30 December 1916 with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, Reinforcements, G Company at the age of 21. His total length of service is given as 3 years 119 days. He served in the Western European Campaign 1917-1918, receiving wounds in service that later made him physically unfit for further service. As well as receiving the British War Medal and Victory Medal John received a D.C.M for gallantry and devotion to duty in the field. Upon his return to Granity John Evans was highly regarded as a friend, family man, businessman and for his dedication to community organisations. (See Obituary on this site).
