John Henry Harris of Denniston, Buller, New Zealand enlisted for World War 1 on 06 December 1915. He was born in Cornwall in 1872. He was eight months old when his family emigrated leaving England on the Lady Jocelyn on 31 July 1873 and arrived in Otago New Zealand on 06 November 1873. The passenger list includes his father John (23), his mother Susan (23), sister Bessie (Besa) who was 1.

John’s father John Harris married Susan (Susannah) Branch in Redruth, Cornwall on 9th July 1870. Both John and Susan were 20 years old when they married. John was a miner (tin/copper). He had been born in Camborne Cornwall in 1851 and Susan in Liskeard, Cornwall in the same year.

Following their arrival in Otago New Zealand in November 1873 the family lived in Otago where son Arthur was born, followed by Huntly where daughters Louisa and Esther Ann were born then on to Denniston by which time John Harris held a Mine Managers Certificate. It is believed they moved to Denniston around 1884. Five further siblings were born in Denniston.

It is not known when John Henry (Jack) moved to Australia where he worked prior to enlisting in 1915. Following the war he suffered from shell shock and died in Australia.
