Joseph Champion, Service No. 36906 served with the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 21st Reinforcements. He served in Western Europe 1917 -1918 and appeared on a casualty list (injured) 25 Oct 1917. Joseph was born in 1891 at Merewether, New South Wales to Rachel and Isaac Champion. He came to NZ with his parents and siblings in 1904. They first lived at Burnetts Face Denniston. At the time of enlistment Joseph was working as a labourer for E Griffiths, Birchfield, Westport. His next of kin on enlistment was his father Isaac Champion. Isaac was killed by being run over by a train on 21 Jan 1917. His next of kin was then changed to Mary Ann Gray his eldest sister. Another sister was Ina Adank who was well known in Westport. Joseph never married. He died on 07 November 1951 at Westport and is buried at the Orowaiti Cemetery. Family contact: Barabara McDonald (Champion)

WESTPORT, Sunday. The body of Isaac Champion, miner, of Stockton, was found in a cattle stop on the railway, near Granity, this morning, having been run over last night by a train. Noone on the train was aware of the accident Champion was a widower, 53 years old.

FATAL ACCIDENT AT DENNISTON.

Westport, January 12. A lad named John Champion, aged 17 years, was run over by a truck today at Denniston, where he was working for the Westport Coal Coy., and died at 3.15 p.m.

COURTS AND OFFENCES. Appeal Court.

WELLINGTON, April 2. The Appeal Court to-day was engaged hearing the case Weßtport Coal Company v. John Champion. In this case Isaac Champion, father of John Champion, had recovered .£3OO in the District Court for the loss of a son killed in an accident on the Company's line. The Company held that the accident was due to the deceased's own negligence. Judgment was reserved.
