Walter Blackburn, born 11 June 1889, worked as a Miner with the Westport Coal Company when he enlisted. He served in the Canturbury Infantry Regiment 1st Battalion. His next of kin was his father who lived in Arleedon, Cumberland. Walter served in the Egyptian, Gallipoloi and Western European campaigns and died of wounds to the head, chest and right arm in France on 03 April 1914. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
