Frederick Charles Bettjeman was born in Westport, New Zealand to Catharina Adeline Wilhemine and Johan Jurgen Heinrich Bettjemann.He was educated at Sergeant's Hill and Waimangaroa Schools then began an engineering apprenticeship with Griffiths Brothers Foundary at Birchfield. He later worked in Australia before returning to New Zealand at the age of 20. He enlisted in 1914 with the 4th Regiment of the 13 Company, North Canterbury and West Coast Infantry Battalion. Frederick served in Gallipoli,Turkey. He married Agnes Muir nee McNab in London on 10 March 1916 and remarried in 1966 to Frances Winifred Chalklen nee Jacobs. Fred was wounded at Gallipoli and ended up in Epsom military hospital in England. There he met his wife to be, Agnes MacNab who was a nurse at the hospital. Upon his return he farmed on the unsuccessful soldiers' settlement in the Mangaputua valley, Whanganui.
